About sailing in the Med :

This sailing area is good for:
1. More challenging winds than the Ionian Winds F2-4, north west to south east
2. Vast sailing area shrouded in history
3.Couples, groups and families (Please note: this particular "learn to sail" holiday is not available for single travellers)
4. Larger sailing passages to ancient classical sites.

Traditional "Stay and Sail" holidays have always been a great way to learn to sail. A week of learning the ropes on a fun Introduction to Yachting course based at a beach club before a week of flotilla sailing. But a two week holiday isn’t right for everyone, which is why a one week learn to sail option has now been introduced.

At the start of your holiday you will move straight onto your yacht, your home for the week. Your yacht will be moored up on our travel partner's own pontoon in Porto Heli, close to all of the hotel facilities which you are welcome to enjoy. (Please note watersports and mountain bike activities are not included as these are for guests of the beach club.)

One week learn to sail yachting courseDuring the first three days of the holiday you will learn to sail by following the Introduction to Yachting course. On the fourth day you will set sail and meet up with the rest of the flotilla, all under the close supervision of a fully qualified sailing instructor. This is a great opportunity to put into practise the skills you have learnt during the previous three days. At the end of the fourth day your instructor will leave your yacht, confident you have the skills required to join the rest of the flotilla sailing under your own steam.

The one week learn to sail price is inclusive of your Introduction to Yachting course. The Introduction to Yachting course will take place on your own yacht or one of our travel partner's training yachts. At least two people from your yacht must complete the Introduction to Yachting course. We can also offer the option to upgrade, for a supplement, to bed and breakfast at the local beach club during your training.

Yacht Training Course - "Introduction to Yachting" - four days

A course designed to be fun but informative, equipping complete beginners with the knowledge and skills necessary to skipper their own yacht on flotilla. The syllabus followed is based on the RYA Keelboat Level 2 certificate. After having completed the course, followed by a second week on flotilla, most new sailors will be awarded their RYA Level 2 certificate.

The skills needed can be learnt in four days with tuition from the Royal Yachting Association qualified instructors. Whilst covering the necessary manoeuvres you will be hopping from pontoon to quayside to bay to harbour. Occasionally stopping for picnics, taverna lunches or swimming, there will be time to digest all that you are learning at a relaxed but steady pace. A maximum of five guests will train per yacht with an instructor. At the end of your course you’ll feel confident and competent enough to skipper your own yacht within a flotilla environment. Your lead crew will be aware of your training and will be on hand to offer their full support during your week afloat.

Details of the sailing area:

The Peloponnese offers great sailing with an unspoilt stunning coastline to explore. The winds are very reliable with lighter breezes in the morning and steady force 3’s and 4’s in the afternoon. Our sailing area based around Porto Heli is a great base from which to explore the bustling tourist islands of Spetses and Hydra to the east and south east.

The Argolic peninsula, studded with ancient ruins divides the eastern Saronic gulf from the western Argolic Gulf. Steeped in history, this fascinating part of Greece is a great sailing area with a stunning, unspoilt coastline waiting to be explored.

Sunset on the Peloponnese coastOn the eastern coastline of the Peloponnese there are many secluded harbours and anchorages, as well as the historical towns of Mycenae, Epidavros and Navplion. Whilst the islands of Poros, Spetses and Hydra are some of the most popular destinations for yachts in Greece. Poros only a few hundred metres off the Peloponnese coast was the home of Poseidon and a few remains of the Temple of Poseidon can still be seen. Just off the southern tip of the Peninsula is Spetses, much of which is covered with pine trees planted in the 19th century; the island is a hideaway for many visiting Athenians, giving it a stylish air.

Tucked away at the top of the Argolic Gulf is Navplion, once the first capital of modern Greece, dominated by a Venetian citadel, which on a clear day affords views back down the Argolic Gulf to Porto Heli and Spetses. South of Spetses, the Peloponnese is a great place to enjoy scenic, uncrowded sailing. The villages visited offer charming shoreside restaurants and an unbeatable welcome to all of our flotillas. The furthest point visited by the flotillas (conditions permitting) is Monemvasia.

A medieval, Byzantine and Venetian fortress town perched on a distinctively shaped headland. The town is a must see, with a jumble of cobbled streets and stunning views over the sea. From your own yacht it’s very easy to imagine how it must have felt to try and invade these impressive fortifications. Monemvasia’s nickname is the Gibraltar of the East. With slightly higher winds than the Ionian, mile upon mile of contrasting scenery, unspoilt harbours and anchorages, together with many places of great historical significance, the Peloponnese offers a sailing experience that should not be missed.
