Indian marketDescribed by somebody has "a total assault on the senses" India is a country that people either quickly fall in love with all quickly hate. Whichever camp you ultimately end up in, one thing is for sure, travelling in India is an experience never forgotten.

The smells, sounds and richness of the experience of being in India can be a life changing experience and generosity and welcome offered by the people can be humbling for a Westerner.

Taj MahalFor those with an interest in the history of India there are many towns and villages with decaying evidence of colonial rule: mostly from British rule but also Portuguese (Goa) and France (Chennai).

Since Independence in 1947 India has embraced capitalist principles and the free-market to the point that for the last 20 years there has been an economic revolution that has transformed the country and the way of life for many of its inhabitants. India is not one long success story though.

Much of the economic benefit derived from India's commercial renaissance has only gone into a few hands and there is widespread poverty, particularly on the outskirts of the big cities and in the countryside.

The beauty of India has to be seen to be believed. A journey through India can take you from the snowcapped Himalayas in the North, via the deserts of Rajastan and the Taj Mahal and on to the hot, lush jungles of Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the South.
