For those with an interest in the history of India there are many towns and villages with decaying evidence of colonial rule: mostly from British rule but also Portuguese (Goa) and France (Chennai).
Since Independence in 1947 India has embraced capitalist principles and the free-market to the point that for the last 20 years there has been an economic revolution that has transformed the country and the way of life for many of its inhabitants. India is not one long success story though. Much of the economic benefit derived from India's commercial renaissance has only gone into a few hands and there is widespread poverty, particularly on the outskirts of the big cities and in the countryside. |
