The travel industry typically categorises walking holidays into these selections:

Moderate: Suitable for people who walk regularly at home in relatively flat countryside but have the capability to climb hills occasionally.
Strenuous walking: Probably walking for up to eight hours a day participants need to be confident of their fitness and have probably done some training beforehand to ensure their stamina is sufficient.
Challenging trekking: This type of activity is suitable for serious walkers who are fit, walk regularly in hilly areas and who are confident that they can walk for many days without a rest day. This is important so that the group is not held up whilst somebody recuperates.

Participants will also need to be confident that they can deal with more difficult terrain such as scree, ice/snow and steep mountain paths. The effects of altitude also need to be considered..

High altitude trekking: This is the really tough trekking in mountain ranges such as the Himalayas and the Andes. Not only are there all the things to cope with listed under the "challenging trekking" section but treks are longer, have increased chance of participants becoming ill and have the added challenge of coping with altitude (high altitude can mean up to 17,000 to 18,000 feet).

These treks are for people who is regularly spent time in the mountains year round. The rewards of all this effort are spending time in beautiful and spectacular parts of the world that most people never see
